Richard Holden MP makes the most of the summer months in North West Durham
If you get the chance, the heather is in full bloom at the moment and it’s absolutely gorgeous up on the fells - you can smell it in the air. There are also lots of easier and flatter walks round the reservoirs and along many trails near our towns if you’re less mobile. Check out https://www.thisisdurham.com if you need some inspiration.
Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon if you don’t do well when it’s too hot. Make sure you lather on the factor 50 and take plenty of water too. Also - if you’re ‘follicly challenged’ like me then a hat is an absolute necessity!
If you’re heading up the dale, a couple of the many lovely places you can stop off for pre-walk supplies are Bakers loaf and Tearooms and Woodhall Greengrocers in Stanhope where I swung by earlier on today.
