Richard attended the APPG for Transport Safety's event on ghost plates.
Speaking after the event, Richard said:
"I’m 100% behind the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Transport Safety’s big push to crack down on dangerous and illegal ghost plates.
So what are ghost plates? Essentially number plates that can’t be properly read, sometimes covered in coatings to deliberately distort what they say to other road users, the police, ANPR cameras etc
These plates are being used to dodge the law and put lives at risk. And they mean higher insurance premiums for everyone amd more dangerous roads because people who have them act with impunity. Tackling them is about safer roads and stronger enforcement for our communities. It was valuable to hear directly from campaigners, industry experts and colleagues across Parliament about the growing challenges around non-compliant plates and the practical steps needed to address them.
Number plates might seem like a small detail, but they play a vital role in keeping our communities safe, supporting law enforcement and making sure everyone plays by the rules. Thank you to everyone involved in organising the drop-in and for the constructive conversations.
I’m backing stronger enforcement of the law and higher fines for perpetrators - up to losing their licence and vehicle."
