Richard Holden, MP for North West Durham, has today spoken in the House of Commons following the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government’s statement on Liverpool City Council.
Richard stated it is not just Liverpool City Council who have run into problems, pointing out that Durham County Council are spending over £50 million on a new headquarters on a floodplain, and that, at the height of the pandemic last year, the council approved a new three and a half thousand square foot roof terrace for themselves. Richard said it is clear that the Labour Party has got its priorities wrong and that councils are putting themselves above the people they serve.
Richard has previously spoken out against the council for ignoring North West Durham in their multi-million pound ‘Leisure Plan’, which you can read about here. A survey Richard ran found that 91% of people felt that Durham County Council’s refusal to give North West Durham money for new facilities is ‘unacceptable – you can read the full results of the survey here. Richard has now pledged to hold the council to account for letting down the constituents of North West Durham.
