Richard Holden, MP for North West Durham, has voiced his support for World Suicide Prevention Day.
Each year, World Suicide Prevention Day is held on 10th September to raise awareness of mental health issues. It is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) anf the World Health Organisation, and organisations like Mind and the Samaritans take part, helping to raise awareness of mental health services that are available across the UK, and encouraging people to talk more generally about mental health.
In 2018, there were 6507 suicides in the UK, with men three times more likely than women to commit suicide. Men aged between 45 and 49 have the highest suicide rates and there has been what the Samaritans described as a ‘significant’ increase in suicide in the UK, which appears to have come from an increase in the male suicide rate. Suicide rates amongst young people are also increasing.
Richard is campaigning for improved mental health services, which you can read about here. He has also written to the Chief Executive of Mind regarding the closure of Derwentside Mind, which you can read about here.
Commenting, Richard said:
“Today is a really important day to recognise the scale of the issue of suicide and the impact it has on friends, families and communities.
“Sadly, there are many people who do not seek help, whether it’s from the stigma of mental health problems or not knowing where to turn to. This day is about promoting the organisations that work around the clock to help people in their most vulnerable moments and to show people that, no matter what, help is available.
“If you or someone you know is struggling, please take a moment to reach out. I want my constituents to know that my office is always here if you are in need of help and can help point you in the right direction to enable you to get the needed support.”
