Richard held a productive meeting with the Shaw Trust on how to support people with additional needs in finding - and crucially keeping- meaningful employment. Afterwards, he said:
"Meeting with Jon & Paul from Shaw Trust to hear more about their work with supporting people with additional needs in #BasildonAndBillericay into finding – and crucially keeping – meaningful employment. I have spoken to lots of local employers reducing staff hours, cutting jobs or concerned about recruiting. With higher taxes on employers, higher business rates, other taxes that penalise long-term investing in the UK, and the (un)employment rights bill - no wonder unemployment is rising and the number of job vacancies are falling.
However, despite these headwinds from Government, I want to do all I can on the ground to reduce unemployment rates locally by helping people find the right jobs. The Shaw Trust also help to educate and develop the knowledge of employers for staff with health conditions and how to make reasonable adjustments for them, to help keep them in employment that is suitable for them. They told me about their work with ex-offenders and MAPPA participants who now want to work and contribute to society and really change their life around. I definitely share their thoughts and goals of helping people into work regarding of their background, condition, or situation.
