It was great to meet the Departmetn for Education Secretary of State, Gillian Keegan MP in Parliament today to tell her all about my next jobs fair in partnership with Derwentside College this Friday, 11am-4pm, with a massive selection of local employers on site!
I’ve been spending my time in Pariament and as a Minister getting out across the country to meet you people undertaking apprenticeships, especially in the transport sector. What I’ve picked up is just so many stories from bright young apprentices who are getting the benefits of earning and learning and also helping local businesses and their local economies too.
Having high-wage high-skill jobs right round the corner at Rolls Royce in Washington or Nissan in Sunderland is so important. I want to see more people take up these opportunities locally because, at the moment, they are tragically underused. And with so many opportunities on offer, it’s got something for everyone.
I want to do all I can to promote this prestigious pathway so I bent the ear of the Secretary of State for Education today to make sure she is on the same page about this. As someone who took this route herself after she left school at 16, I think she’s a fantastic advocate for apprenticeships being able to take you as far as your talents allow.
