Great to pop by the Beeston coking ovens just outside Tow Law. They are one of 14,000 that used to burn day and night across County Durham at the peak of the industrial revolution, essential in the production of steel that was the envy of the world. As a result, Tow Law went from a village of 400 to an industrial powerhouse of over 4,000 in a matter of years.
These ovens powered the industrial revolution across the UK. It is amazing to think of what it would have been like to stand in this spot 150 years ago among the blistering heat. They are so well preserved you can even see where the flames melted the brickwork.
The industrial revolution is such an important part of our heritage here in North West Durham, one I am so proud of. I want to see more stuff like this celebrating this important moment in global history.
