Fantastic to visit the Derwent Valley Car Club in Blackhill.
They are a community-based car club that offers pay-as-you-go electric car hire by the day or by the hour. They established the first solely electric Community Car Club in 2014 in Blackhall Mill but are now in Blackhill, Shotley Bridge and soon Burnopfield.
Since 2014 they have gone from strength to strength. They have expanded their reach in the Derwent Valley to Shotley Bridge, Rowlands Gill and Blackhill with driver and non-driver members, individual and multi-person memberships. What’s more, they even have a team of dedicated volunteer drivers helping people who can’t drive make their social, hospital and employment appointments.
What does it cost?
All costs of subscription are the same:
- £5 per month membership subscriptions
Or £8.50 per month multi person membership (Two people of the same home address)
On top of this you pay a hour hire rates at:
£4 per hour
£30.00 per 24 hour hire
No charge for fuel on top of this!

For those who don’t need their own car or could use it in place of a second car this is a great initiative. Great to chat to people powering this fantastic local initiative backed by Department for Transport funding.
