Richard Holden, MP for North West Durham, has spoken during Home Office Questions about the proposed Hassockfield Detention Centre, refugees and illegal immigration.
The Home Office have confirmed to Richard that the Hassockfield Detention Centre will house around 80 female foreign nationals awaiting deportation and repatriation to their home country at any point. This will consist of female offenders who have finished their prison sentences and need to be deported home and female foreign nationals who have broken their visa rules or are failed asylum seekers. You can find out more information about the proposed site here.
Chris Philp, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Home Office), confirmed that the detention centre will create local jobs and only people with no right to stay in the country will be there. He also joined Richard in condemning the local Labour party who he described as ‘against proper border control’.
Speaking after Richard, Bob Blackman, MP for Harrow East, asked whether proposals will be brought forward to ensure that dangerous and violent criminals who are foreign nationals with no right to be in the country do not have their deportations frustrated.
