We have all seen the dreadful pictures and stories coming out of Turkey and Syria following the devastating earthquake that happened there last week. Tragically, more than 46,000 men, women and children have died in the rubble, with this set to go further still. It is hard to comprehend the scale of havoc wreaked by this disaster.
Given the level of devastation and sheer number of significant aftershocks, it’s clear that it support for those left without homes in order to be able to rebuild their lives is going to take some time.
Just a couple of examples of what people are doing: in North West Durham, dedicated people at the Wolsingham Parish Church organised an Earthquake appeal fundraiser at the town hall. In the North East, a Sunderland-based charity worker is preparing an 'entire field hospital' to support those without shelter, water and electricity. To match this is a £25 million package of aid from the Government to address this apocalyptic event.
Commenting, Richard Holden MP said:
"Survivors are desperately in need of food, water, shelter and power. That is why I am so proud of all the great work going on in North West Durham, the North East and the UK as a whole. Yet again, our characteristic generosity of spirit is front and centre on the world stage.
"If you are in a position to support then you can donate via ActionAid. Anything and everything will make a difference."
