So sad to see the arson attack on Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens.
Founded in 1808 by scholars fleeing the French Revolution, Ushaw College is steeped in history. While it used to be a catholic college, it has now been transformed into a beautiful heritage site. As well as working with Durham University, it receives around 50,000 visitors a year.
Thankfully, no one was hurt but I want to see whoever's responsible for this dreadful act brought to justice and Ushaw House restored to its former glory.
We have such a rich academic history, from Bede and St Cuthbert to Ushaw College and now to having a number of world class universities right on our doorstep.
The history of the North is fascinating, and one I am so proud of. I always jump at an opportunity to learn more about it. The sooner repairs are complete and people can come back the better.
